Your internet
return address.
One quick check. The address this server sees when your browser connects.
THE AHA MOMENT
A little clarity. A big difference.An IP address is the return address for internet traffic.
It helps replies find their way back to you. At home, devices often share the public address of your router and have their own local addresses inside your network. An IP can suggest a rough region, but it is not a precise street address or a person’s identity.
Your public IP address
The address websites see when you say hello.
What am I looking at?
On a deployed site, this is usually the public IP of your router, mobile network, or VPN exit point. It may be shared with other people.
Need your local network details?
On Windows, ipconfig /all shows adapter information. On macOS, look in System Settings → Network. A website cannot read all of those details.
A tiny privacy reminder
An IP isn’t a precise location or a person’s identity. Share it privately when trusted support staff need it.
